Q&A: Maternity Insurance?

Question by Ashlie: Maternity Insurance?
I was just able to get individual insurance for my family, not group. Down fall is, they do not provide maternity care and we are looking at having a baby in the next 6 months to a year. Any advice? Is there an additioanl company that would insure us seperately or what? Confused….

Be careful with insurances and maternity. I had to pay a lot after delivery.
I think pre-existing time frame should be around 12 months. It’s better to wait for one year prior to conception.

Good luck.

  • call your nearby State Farm Agent they should take care of you with all your needs and for a low price that anyone can afford.

  • Can you ask for the state-aid like medicaid?

I live in NYS and they covered everything for me when I got pregnant…well I was a college student though…minimun income…

I paid to my private health insurance (school health insurance, which did not cover the maternity care, covers only basics), and later the state reimbursed my expenses (somthing like that…my husband took care of it..so not 100% sure)….also free care for my baby till I graduated and got a job…

    Good luck for everything!

  • You’re not alone. Many insurers just don’t want to take on the costs associated with maternity care. I used to write policies for one company that would cover you, but it was an extra $ 300 a month AND there was a 12 month waiting period for the coverage. That’s $ 3600 in premiums straight down the drain.

I’ve never heard of any company that was willing to provide maternity only coverage, and if they did it would be astronomically expensive.

Your best bet is to shop around for coverage just for yourself that includes maternity, perhaps leaving your family insured under the current plan. You can also try calling your OB and the area hospital and try to negotiate a lower price for their services since you’d be paying out of pocket.

Also, you should check with your county and state to see if they have special programs to provide services for expectant Moms. Sometimes they will pay for all of your pre-natal care to ensure your protect the health of your unborn child.

    Best of luck!

  • Unfortunately, there is not enough info here to answer your question. It depends on your income and what you can afford. Yes, you probably can get yourself covered for maternity, but it’s not cheap. There will be a waiting period too-probably 12 months. Weigh the costs against the premium amounts for that time frame. Check with your state Medicaid program. Maternity coverage allows incomes to be much higher than for other types of services. Even if you have a Share of Cost each month, it will be less than getting your own coverage.

  • No, the only place you can get maternity coverage is through a large group policy. That’s because, on private policies, only the people that want to have babies, buy the coverage – so there’s no spreading of the risk.

Just like, are you interested in buying a policy that covers IVF treatments, even though you don’t think you’re going to need it? Of course not! It’s like only selling car insurance AFTER the accident, to cover the accident. The companies would go broke.

  • Yes you can get supplemental coverage just
for maternity. People have had good experience
with MySimpleCard. Check it out, they save you
on doctors visits, blood tests, sonograms, and hospital
    stay for delivery.
